All my paintings, prime or otherwise - Uig Sands for example, are created using various combinations of oil and acrylics, crayon, torn and cut paper and tissue, plaster, ash and anything else that could make an interesting surface. Through the use of templates, stencils and masking tape I can control the design to help show any underlying mathematical structure.
Fascinated by prime numbers, I use this unique set of values as building blocks for my maths inspired artworks.
I'm currently working on and engaged with . .
The division of a square picture space into different areas using prime numbers. see
Mondrian in his Prime - 2020 or
Prime Perspective - 2020
The relationship between prime numbers and multiples of 6 within spirals. See
UlamX6 - 2018 where 6 multiples are black, or
Prime Spiral Honeycomb - 2014 where the multiples are white. In both prints the primes are given a colour
Creating patterned prime factor grids by swapping images for primes within number sequences. See
Primary Care - 2020 or
Prime Marks - 2010
When creating digital prints I usually begin with paper sketches which I then refine with Excel, CorelDraw and Photoshop to finish the design. The completed artworks are then published using high-quality archival inks and acid-free paper. I sometimes develop a print from an existing painting, and often vice versa!
